India's capital Rises to Toxic Haze Post Diwali
As Tuesday dawned citizens of this heavily contaminated metropolis found themselves inhaling severely hazardous air that fell into the "critical" range.
Alarming Air Quality Levels
Multiple areas of Delhi showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which equals ten times the recommended level established by the World Health Organization.
Certain monitoring stations, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of 1800, equating to fifteen to twenty times above healthy limits.
Pyrotechnics Prohibition and New Developments
Since 2020, the government had maintained a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of firecrackers during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the dangerous smog that engulfs the city as colder weather approaches.
However earlier this year, the recently formed city leadership petitioned the highest court to propose a relaxation of the ban.
They proposed allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – which have been doubted by environmentalists as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Legal Verdict and Enforcement
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judicial authorities approved the appeal, stipulating that green firecrackers could be set off during limited hours throughout the Diwali.
During the celebrations, there was considerable violation of the time restrictions across the city, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the firecrackers being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Numerous monitoring devices throughout the city registered pollution peaking around midnight to extremely hazardous measurements recorded during the festival in at least three years.
Regional Consequences
The proliferation of firecrackers during the festival also initiated a controversy with adjacent Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistani Punjab partially attributing worsening air quality in their urban centers on contaminants originating in India following the festivities.
Persistent Pollution Issue
The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the capital have remained as a serious challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.
During the festival period, the amount of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been found to shoot up to 70% higher the worst records ever measured in the Chinese city, which was once considered as the globally most contaminated city.
Various Pollution Contributors
The problem in the city is resulting from a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, construction debris, construction activities, waste incineration and smoke from agricultural fires in nearby areas of neighboring agricultural zones.
Throughout these areas, rural residents routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating toxic smog that becomes contained over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Health and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical impact on the approximately 33 million residents living in the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple studies.
This pollution leads to elevated rates of neurological, heart and circulatory and respiratory disorders, and can result in malignancies.
Air quality crisis is projected to be accounting for 10,000 early mortalities annually in the capital.
